WSD Calendar - Hope 2013

You will be happy to know that the WSD calendar (Wall and Desk) for 2013 is now available. The theme of this year's calendar is of hope, based on the story of Asha and thus the story of each street dog and the odd cat that goes through the WSD kennels, be it for treatment, sterilisation or sheltering after abandonment.

The calendar is available at various outlets in Mumbai and Kolkata. (Please see list given below). It can also be couriered to various cities outside Mumbai (check with us on the courier costs depending on the no and type). It is priced at Rs 150 (Wall and Desk) as a donation towards WSD's sterilisation, immunization and health care programmes.  To order the WSD calendar, you can e-mail on wsdindia@gmail.com or call 64222838.

Photographs taken by Rohan Mukerjee, Parizaad Dotiwalla, Anil Purohit, , Abodh Aras & Daniela Cony.

The story of Asha – an aptly named street dog – taught all of us at WSD to never stop hoping... and loving life. We found Asha in a slum near Worli. Her face was eaten away by maggots, leaving her with  no discernible features. Even then, despite the agonising pain, she wagged her tail vigorously, as though to thank us for rescuing her!
February
The magnificent Bruno, a German Shepard, is the only abandoned pet whose original name we know. We found him tied to a pole near Crawford Market with a note from the family who abandoned him. Over the years, WSD has rescued hundreds of pets abandoned on the streets like Bruno and found good homes for them.

The spirited Asha responded very well to her treatment but the affected parts of her face grew skin without any hair. She may not have won beauty contests where the beauty is only skin deep. But her personality shone through... her loving licks and bubbly barks winning over many hearts. After a year of lighting up our lives at the WSD kennels, she was adopted by Vanessa, a WSD volunteer and dog behaviour expert, who met Asha and loved her enough to take her home. Asha now resides at one of the most coveted addresses in Mumbai. But, more importantly, she has found a place in the hearts of a wonderful family.

Through this year's WSD calendar, which has been inspired by her, we hope to introduce you to some of the wonderful dogs in our kennels and give you a glimpse into their lives. Over the years, we at WSD have realised that each dog comes with his own destiny. Very often, we don’t know their past... whether theye were abandoned, lost, abused or born on the street and looked after by people who also don’t have a roof over their heads. But we have seen their futures unfold before our eyes.

March
Puppy was treated by WSD as an out-patient. Pups are a rarity at WSD as we do not have a separate puppy pen. On a daily basis, WSD treats scores of such animals as out-patients – pups, kittens, dogs and cats – who are brought in by animal lovers, volunteers and poor people who care for them, all free of charge.

Asha's success was echoed in the tales of other dogs too. But, just as many street dogs don't have stories with happy endings. Not all of them get adopted and that’s why we endeavour to make their stay with us as comfortable as possible. They adapt, they have their routines and the kennel is now their home. But it's not the same as having a real home and master. Their lives are incomplete.

September
Tripod, our three-legged cat, has a field day every day, roaming around the WSD kennels and compound. Where there is food, there is Tripod. His favourite place is a vantage point near the kitchen! Here, he is seen against the wall of the WSD kennels which bears the WSD logo painted by school children. Though we are a dog kennel, WSD does get the odd cat, which led to us starting a small cat-sterilisation programme some years ago.
Here's where you come in. Dogs so wonderfully and seamlessly fill the spaces in our lives and reward us with their unconditional love. Give them a place in your home and they’ll give you their hearts – for life. Adopt a stray dog today!

August
Candy is the reigning queen of the WSD kennels and part of our kennel reception committee. Candy just loves people and came to WSD with a mangled leg due to an accident. It had to be amputated, but nevertheless, Candy holds the distinction of being the fastest dog in the kennels!

July
Tiger, an airport dog, thrives in human company. He is most happy when volunteers and groups from schools and colleges come to walk him. WSD has housed more than 300 dogs brought from the airport and found homes for most of them. WSD encourages volunteers to ‘Walk the Dogs’ at the WSD kennels.

The calendar is available at various outlets in Mumbai.

WSD - Best Friends- Calendar 2012

You will be happy to know that the WSD calendar(Wall and Desk) for 2012 is now available. The theme of this year's calendar is Best Friends. It is a celebration of the bond that street dogs have developed with other living beings … be it other dogs, cats, and of course…people.

The calendar is available at various outlets in Mumbai. (Please see given below). It can also be couriered to various cities outside Mumbai(check with us on the courier costs depending on the no and type). It is priced at Rs 150 (Wall and Desk) as a donation towards WSD's sterilisation, immunization and health care programmes.

The WSD Calendar for 2012 is inspired by Julie from the Oval Maidan. Julie’s life truly epitomized what friendship is all about. Providing a gentle haven where the other can be relaxed and feel safe. Being together without needing to pretend. Loving another person in spite of flaws and imperfections.

Julie got along famously with the pets that came to the Oval and the strays that lived there. She did not distinguish between the pedigreed and the pariah. She embraced them all with the joie de vivre that was so characteristic of her.

As you flip through the pages of this calendar, you will be moved by the uplifting stories that tell of the unconditional love and devotion shared among friends (on twos and fours!)

So come, join the Best Friends as they sing their “Song of Friendship”

The photos have been taken by Rohan Mukerjee. Rohan has been a dedicated volunteer with WSD for several years. His passion for animals is clearly evident in the poignant images that have graced the pages of the current as well as all previous WSD calendars. Rohan holds a Master’s degree in Ecological Economics from the University of Edinburgh and is presently working for Samrakshan, an NGO dedicated to preserving the forests in Meghalaya. Rohan’s commitment to WSD continues with the annual trips that he religiously makes to Mumbai to shoot for the WSD calendar every year

The Mumbai Twestival 2011

The Welfare of Stray Dogs(WSD) has been chosen as the NGO from Mumbai in the Twestival Local 2011 - an annual event that encourages local groups of Twitter users to raise money and awareness in aid of their favorite charities.

Twestival was born out of the idea that if cities were able to collaborate on an international scale, but work from a local level, it could have a spectacular impact. Since 2009, over 200 cities have participated by hosting offline events raising close to $1.2 million for 137 causes; most notably education and clean water.

Now, we need your help to spread the word and raise funds.  GiveIndia, the online fundraising partner, will be offering additional money to the city/NGO that raises the most and has the most donors. So far, over Rs.10,000 has been raised but we can do more.

You can donate as little as Rs.110 or as much as you’d like.  Here’s the link:
